The Origin of Lorem Ipsum
The Lorem Ipsum text is derived from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The standard text begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." — a scrambled, altered excerpt from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the original Latin work.
Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College, traced the origin in 1994. The text was popularized in the 1960s by Letraset (dry-transfer lettering sheets) and later by Aldus PageMaker desktop publishing software.
Why Lorem Ipsum Is Used
Placeholder text serves a specific purpose in design:

- Long names and short names: "Lorem ipsum" has similar word lengths. Real user names include "Li Wang", "Alexander Konstantinopoulou", "María García-López". These break layouts that Lorem ipsum doesn't.
- Numbers and dates: Financial dashboards, calendars, and data tables need realistic numbers to evaluate readability.
- Multilingual UI: German compound words, Arabic right-to-left text, and CJK characters require actual content to test layouts.
- Content-dependent UI: A feed showing article summaries should use article-length summaries, not Latin filler.
