How to password-protect a PDF
This tool encrypts a PDF with a standard PDF password so it can't be opened (or printed/copied) without the right credentials. Encryption runs entirely in your browser using a pure-JavaScript engine, so the document and the password never touch a server. You can set a user password to open the file and an optional owner password that governs permissions like printing, copying and editing.
Key features
- Set an open (user) password and optional owner password
- Toggle printing, copying, modifying and annotating permissions
- Standard PDF encryption (RC4/AES) recognized by every reader
- 100% in-browser — the PDF and password are never uploaded
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF or password uploaded?
No. Encryption happens in your browser with JavaScript, so neither the document nor the password ever leaves your device.
How strong is the protection?
It uses standard PDF password encryption, which deters casual access and is honored by all PDF readers. It is not a guarantee against a determined attacker with specialized tools — treat it as a lock, not a vault.
What's the difference between the user and owner password?
The user (open) password is required to view the file. The owner password controls permissions such as printing and copying; if you leave it blank we reuse the user password.
